MOM’S MEALS NOURISHCARE® SHARES ITS SCALABLE SOLUTION
(March 15, 2016 – Des Moines, IA) As the number of senior Americans facing hunger issues, or food insecurity, continues to rise, Mom’s Meals NourishCare®, a leading provider of fresh-made, home-delivered meals and nutrition services, was invited as the only commercial food service company to participate in the Institute of Medicine’s (IOM) workshop, “Meeting the Dietary Needs of Older Americans,” which was held in October. The full report on the workshop was released last week. Focusing on the growing need of “hunger insecure adults,” the workshop also looked at the country’s readiness to handle the dietary needs of older adults, knowing that by the year 2033, one in five Americans will be age 65 or older.
“It is overwhelming to consider that one in six seniors – that’s over nine million Americans – face the threat of hunger, a statistic that has risen 45% since 2001 and 56% since the recession in 2007,” said Beth Burrough, Partner and Vice President Healthcare Alliances at Mom’s Meals NourishCare. “Food insecurity is connected with a host of poor nutrition and health outcomes, and as this hunger rate continues to rise, we are likely to face new public health issues we had not anticipated.”
Panelists at the two-day conference in Washington, DC included nutrition researchers and experts from universities, government agencies, social services, program administrators and non-profit organizations. Among those presenting was Burrough, invited by two of the Academy of Science committee members who asked Mom’s Meals NourishCare to share how they had created a national, scalable retail model to address food insecurity and seniors in need.
“The ability to have meals of your choosing delivered to your door cannot be understated for what they bring in terms of human dignity and independence,” said Burrough, “But even more crucial is knowing that the meals are nutritionally-balanced and may be tailored to specific dietary needs, whether it be a need for heart-friendly, diabetic-friendly or renal-friendly meals or those who need a pureed menu who may have swallowing issues like dysphagia.”
Mom’s Meals NourishCare is provides healthy meals to those who are food insecure, want to continue ‘aging in place,’ manage a chronic disease, or recuperate at home.
According to Burrough, “The ultimate success for this workshop would be to bring to the attention of the Department of Health & Human Services (HHS), and potentially the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), the need for funding for nutritional meals for aging adults, especially those who are food insecure. We also want them to think about nutrition as a critical health intervention so that it becomes an integral part of the medical care plan for conditions where it has already been clinically shown to impact diseases, including congestive heart failure, cardiovascular, diabetes, kidney and malnutrition.”
