New Legislation Targeting Chronic Conditions a Focus at Upcoming National AHIP Conference

Posted on Tuesday, October 9, 2018 in News

The recently passed Bipartisan Budget Act of 2018, and its subsequent effect on Medicare Advantage plans in 2020, will be one of the pertinent healthcare topics highlighted at America’s Health Insurance Plans’ (AHIP) National Conference on Medicare, Medicaid & Duals, taking place in Washington, D.C., October 14-18, 2018.

Catherine Macpherson, Chief Nutrition Officer at Mom’s Meals NourishCare, the nation’s leading provider of home-delivered meals for older adults, people recently hospitalized, and people with chronic conditions, will be presenting Policy Changes and Innovation in Caring for Members with Chronic Conditions, alongside Hank Osowski, Managing Partner, Strategic Health Group LLC and Scott Rinefort, Senior Product Director, CareMore Health, on October 16.

“We continue to see an increase in the number of Americans suffering with chronic illness, especially among adults age 65 and over,” said Macpherson. “This policy serves as a turning point in how Medicare Advantage plans will care for members with chronic conditions. It expands the types of benefits Medicare Advantage plans can offer and allows plans to target certain benefits to members with unique needs, due to their chronic conditions. This opens the door for innovation and we are seeing condition-specific home-delivered meals playing a role in new benefit design.”

Session attendees will learn about the law’s provisions with regard to supplemental benefits and the targeting of benefits for members with chronic conditions. They will also hear about an innovative model of care that supports people with uncontrolled chronic conditions with home-delivered meals and other benefits, which can serve as an example for payer teams considering 2020 benefit designs.

“Our growing population of chronically ill patients is a primary source of healthcare costs in Medicare Advantage plans,” continued Macpherson. “To support this vulnerable population and address increasing costs, we are seeing teams at Medicare Advantage plans innovate and look at the big picture of what really impacts health outcomes for members, and begin to apply resources toward addressing the social determinants of health. It really is an exciting change.”

Macpherson is a Registered Dietitian and leader in healthcare innovation. She is the Vice President of Product Strategy and Development, as well as Chief Nutrition Officer for Mom’s Meals NourishCare.
