Mom’s Meals, a leading, national provider of home-delivered meals, announces today results of a study published by?Hemodialysis International evaluating the impact of home-delivered meals to help support a reduction in dietary sodium and meet health goals among hemodialysis (HD) patients. The study results show that kidney-friendly, home-delivered meals are an effective approach to improving the volume control and blood pressure of these patients.
The study monitored 20 qualifying HD patients who followed a usual (control) diet for the first four weeks followed by four weeks of three low-sodium, home-delivered meals per day (provided by Mom’s Meals).
Mike Anderson, president of Mom’s Meals, reacted to the study results, “We were delighted to see the promising results from this investigator-driven clinical trial. The health improvements experienced by the study volunteers are consistent with what we have seen in the past in line with our company’s mission and passion – creating better health by providing nutritionally-tailored meals right to your door.”
The two-month study measured participants’ interdialytic weight gain, hydration status (bioimpedance), standardized blood pressure, and food intake (3-day dietary recall) at baseline, after the 4-week period of usual diet, and after the meal intervention.
Results showed a significant reduction in interdialytic weight gain among volunteers when compared to the usual dietary habits of HD patients. Other improvements included reduction in dietary sodium, thirst, and dry mouth (xerostomia) scores, as well as volume overload, blood pressure, and serum phosphorus.
“We are very excited about the positive results from this pilot study, but realize more work is needed,” said Dr. Kenneth Wilund, one of the study’s authors. “Our next step is to conduct a larger, longer randomized clinical trial that examines whether a short term meal delivery protocol promotes sustained/long-term changes in dietary behavior.”
The clinical trial was conducted by the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, and funded in part by a grant from the Renal Institute, Inc.
